SZA's Big Year Continues-'Barbie' Win, First 2024 GRAMMY Nominations

Multiple milestones occurred after the 2024 GRAMMY nominees which were revealed on Nov. 10. In the 94 categories, SZA’s first-time wins and Taylor Swift’s record-tying nominations stand out.

Below are five noteworthy 2024 GRAMMY nominations.

 

  1. SZA’s Big Year Rewarded

SZA was a popular musician this year, according to her GRAMMY nominations. SZA has nine 2024 GRAMMY nominations and various new accomplishments. Pre-2024 GRAMMYs SZA has 15 nominations and one win in key categories. Work nominations make her latest nominations notable.

“Kill Bill” marks SZA’s first solo Song and Record of the Year nomination, and her ambitious second album SOS is her first Album of the Year nomination. She is nominated for AOTY in 2022 as a featured artist on Doja Cat’s Planet Her (Deluxe), ROTY and SOTY with Kendrick Lamar for “All The Stars” in 2019 and “Kiss Me More” in 2022.

Her first nominations are for Best Progressive R&B Album (SOS) and Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Love Language”).

 

  1. Women Lead

      Who runs 2024 GRAMMYs? Girls.

This year, many women received GRAMMY nominations, including SZA. Boygenius (6), SZA (9), Phoebe Bridgers (7), Brandy Clark (6), Miley Cyrus (6), Olivia Rodrigo (6), Taylor Swift (6), and Victoria Monét joined the list. Cyrus while celebrating her nominations in a social media post added “Watching women win & rule the music industry makes me proud.”

This year’s nominees are largely women. Women dominate Record, Album, and Pop Solo Performance awards of the year.

Women have four of the five Best R&B Song and Album nominees, including Babyface’s collaboration album Girls Night Out.

 

  1. ‘Barbie’ Rules Again

2024 GRAMMY nominations favored Barbie.

Rihanna’s anticipated musical return is “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She performed “Barbie World,” “Dance The Night,” “I’m Just Ken,” and “What Was I Made For?”.    ” Dance the Night” and “What Was I Made For?” were Song, Record, and Pop Solo Performance nominees. “Barbie World” was a Best Rap Song candidate.

Naturally, Barbie Best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media is the album’s nominee. Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt were nominated for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media for their creativity.

 

  1. Big Artist Firsts

As in 2023, the 2024 GRAMMY nominees included thrilling firsts. The January Meet The First-Time GRAMMY Nominee series on GRAMMY.com will feature various new artists.

Taylor Swift had seven Song Of The Year nominations first. She took home for “Anti-Hero,” “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film),” “cardigan,” “Lover,” “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” & “You Belong With Me.” At the 2024 GRAMMYs, she might make history, but not right away.

Endless Summer Vacation, Miley Cyrus’s ninth record, is her first shot at being record Of The Year. Lil Nas X’s MONTERO talked about her for 2022 AOTY. Cyrus’s first votes came from “Flowers,” which was for Record, Song, and Pop Solo Performance. Her duet with Brandi Carlile, “Thousand Miles,” was for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Victoria Monét got her first nomination for a GRAMMY. Monét was nominated three times: once in 2021 for Chloe x Halle’s “Do It” and twice in 2020 for her work as a singer and producer on Ariana Grande’s “7 rings” (Record of the Year) and “thank u, next” (Album of the Year). She is up for six GRAMMYs in 2024, all for her work. One of them is for Best New Artist. She was nominated for Record of the Year (“On My Mama”), Best R&B Performance (“How Does It Make You Feel”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Hollywood”), Best R&B Song (“On My Mama”), and Best R&B Album for Jaguar II, her Phoebe Bridgers’ boygenius, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker ensemble garnered GRAMMY nominations. For the first time since 2012, fun. and Mumford & Sons garnered six nominations each at the 2013 GRAMMYs, including Album Of The Year for “Not Strong Enough”.

Some GRAMMY-nominated musicians received their first nominations in new categories this year. Olivia Rodrigo, 2022’s Best New Artist, won her first Rock category for “ballad of a homeschooled girl” (Best Rock Song); Jon Batiste, 2022’s Album Of The Year winner, won Song Of The Year (“Butterfly”) and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Candy Necklace” with Lana Del Rey); and Brandy Clark won Best Americana Performance (“Dear Insecurity” with Brandi Carlile).

Best Song Written For Visual Media nominees are Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Josh Groban in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street.”

ASAKE & Olamide (“Amapiano”), Davido Featuring Musa Keys (“UNAVAILABLE”), Ayra Starr (“Rush”), and Tyla (“Water”) are the 2024 GRAMMYs’ first Best African Music Performance candidates.

 

  1. Taylor Swift Wants More Grammys

Taylor Swift won Grammys. She may win Album Of The Year in 2024 after being the first female artist to win three times in 2021.

If Swift’s Midnights wins Album Of The Year, she’ll have a record of four victories, surpassing Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon, and Stevie Wonder.

Swift tied a GRAMMY record, nevertheless. Swift matches Barbra Streisand with six female Album of the Year nominations with Midnights.
