The renowned actor Kit Harington spoke out about his diagnosis of ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) and other challenges like alcoholism, mental health, and social anxiety on a podcast of The Hidden 20%.
During the podcast, he told the host, “I realized that my life was hinging on this”. After several struggles he can fight this obstacle and here’s all you need to know about it!
The Star’s Blockbuster career in Game of Thrones:
The celebrity portrayed Jon Snow, is one of the main protagonist characters in the popular HBO television series known as “Game of Thrones” or GOT. During the entire series, the character portrayed by Harrington increased in significance as he went through drastic character development.
The potential of the star to portray the Jon Show has without any doubt contributed immensely to the popularity and success of the show. After the series concluded after airing the eight-season in 2019 fans and critics had a widely varied review of Jon Show’s character.
Kit Harington’s fall into the Rabbit Hole:
During the Hidden 20% podcast the star expressed that his struggles with mental health and alcoholism mainly came from the fame received from GOT. He said, “trying to project this image of utter sophistication and coolness about what I was doing but genuinely sort of terrified about everything.”
He also added, “ That is a dangerous rabbit hole to fall because you find all of the bad stuff that people are saying as well as the nice stuff.” The star also talked about his “breakdown” after the show was wrapped. However, after his appearance in True West in 2018 and 2019 he collapsed, finally, pushing him to take action.
Alcoholism and ADHD Symptoms:
After his rehab visit, he was diagnosed with ADHD. Several People with ADHD experience symptoms like “hyperactivity which is an excess movement not quite suitable for the setting, inattention which means not being able to focus properly, and impulsivity which is acting fast without any thoughts”, as per the American Psychiatric Association.
It is also mentioned, “ADHD is considered a chronic and debilitating disorder and is known to impact the individual in many aspects of life including academic and professional achievements, interpersonal relationships. And daily functioning.”
Fighting Back the Odds:
Taking in the news of ADHD wasn’t easy on the actor. He left his second rehabilitation facility thinking that he could deal with the situation on his own, “I’ll try to deal with this by myself,” he said to himself which didn’t work out.
Yet the diagnosis of ADHD had become fruitful for the actor. He was able to stay a little sober and present for his two kids after the diagnosis. But ADHD still posed a great threat, “My head wants to go to every other thing in the room at once.” Harington said.
After the star’s last rehab visit, he has got his anxiety in good order as well as his mental health. However, when he is in “sort of freeze mode”, his spouse usually asks him to shower as it acts as a coping mechanism, “And I go, ‘OK’, because it’s like my brain short-circuits,” he said to the host, “ start the day again.”
Now Harington is sober and focused on his children and his wife.
